Veneers and crowns: what is the difference?

A veneer covers the front of a tooth. A crown covers a prepared tooth more fully, often to restore damage. Your teeth, gums and bite determine which treatment is suitable.

01

Start with your teeth

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

Explain what you want to change and keep. The dentist should examine your teeth, gums and bite before recommending treatment. Discuss shape and shade alongside the clinical need.

02

Know what would be removed

Before-and-after photos cannot show how much preparation your teeth need. Ask the dentist:

  • What would be removed from each tooth?
  • Is the change irreversible?
  • What might future replacement involve?

Compare orthodontics, veneers and crowns when tooth position is part of the change you want.

03

Consider smaller changes

Whitening changes colour, composite bonding can repair small chips or change shape, and orthodontics moves teeth. Ask which could preserve more natural tooth in your case, including limits, maintenance and any retainer needs. They cannot automatically replace a crown needed for damage. Discuss leaving the tooth untreated too.

If you already have restorations, read about repairing or replacing existing crowns and veneers before assuming they all need replacement.

04

Check gums and bite

Decay and gum disease need attention before veneers. Grinding, clenching or a deep bite can affect suitability. For a damaged tooth, ask whether a filling, inlay or onlay could provide enough protection.

05

Check temporary and final teeth

Find out whether temporary restorations are planned, how to care for them and whom to call if one loosens. They may look different from the final teeth.

Before final attachment, discuss shape, shade and fit. Report a bite that feels wrong after fitting; a digital preview cannot confirm the fit.

For the wider appointment plan, read about planning and fitting veneers and preparing and fitting crowns. Ask your dentist which design, temporary work and fitting checks apply to each tooth.

06

Get the plan in writing

The quote should name each restoration, material, tooth and appointment, including temporary teeth and reviews. Before travel, ask how findings at examination could change the cost or length of stay.

Use our guide to how to compare dental treatment quotes to check the same treatment stages and materials in each plan.

07

Plan future care

Ask about cleaning, reviews, repairs and eventual replacement, including who would help after you return home. Take time to consider the plan before agreeing.

Use the dental aftercare planning checklist to prepare questions about reviews, records and getting help at home.
