A KEY QUESTION
Compare the effect on neighbouring teeth, surgery, healing and long-term care.
At a glance.
| Compare | Implant-supported tooth | Tooth-supported bridge |
|---|---|---|
| Support | Implant in the jaw | Neighbouring teeth |
| Treatment | Surgery, healing and restoration | Depends on design and supporting teeth |
| Quote | Implant, connector and final tooth | Design, material and number of units |
| Care | Clean around the implant and restoration | Clean around and beneath the bridge |
General differences to discuss with your dentist. This comparison does not determine which treatment is suitable for you.
Identify the support
A complete implant-supported tooth includes the implant, a connector and the final restoration. A bridge may be supported by teeth or implants, so ask which design the dentist means. The comparison above concerns a tooth-supported bridge.
Options for replacing missing teeth
The dentist should assess your mouth and medical history. Compare risks, maintenance and the consequences of waiting.
- Which options are suitable?
- What would happen to neighbouring teeth?
- Is preparatory treatment needed?
Check the bridge design
A conventional bridge may use crowns on teeth beside the gap. An adhesive, or Maryland, bridge uses bonded wings and may avoid full-crown preparation. Suitability depends on the gap, supporting teeth and bite.
A conventional three-unit bridge can replace one missing tooth with support from two crowns. Have the supporting and replacement teeth marked on the plan, and ask for a cleaning demonstration.
For the adhesive option, read how a Maryland bridge is supported and fitted.
When comparing bridge designs, check how bridge units affect the quote. A single-crown starting price does not establish the cost of the complete bridge.

Include your health
Smoking can impair healing. Poorly controlled diabetes can increase infection and implant-failure risk. Discuss your own risks, ways to reduce them and options that avoid surgery. Do not change prescribed medicines without agreement from the clinicians responsible for your care.
Allow for healing
Implants may need placement, healing and a later final restoration, sometimes over separate trips. Temporary teeth are a separate stage. For a bridge, confirm preparation, temporary teeth, fitting and reviews. Ask the clinical team to confirm the schedule before non-refundable travel bookings.
Our dental implant treatment timeline explains the questions to ask about assessment, healing, temporary teeth and the final restoration.
Compare complete quotes
Check the implant, connector, final restoration, examinations and any additional procedures. For a bridge, check the design and number of units. Include reviews and possible return visits in your budget.
Read the checklist for comparing dental quotes before deciding whether two prices cover the same work.
Discuss a missing tooth on WhatsAppHave a particular gap in mind?
Tell the coordination team which tooth or teeth you want to ask about. A dentist will need to assess the gap, neighbouring teeth and wider oral health before recommending treatment.
