PLAN YOUR TREATMENT STAGES

Dental implant timeline: stages and visits

Implant treatment usually involves assessment, surgery, healing and final teeth. A “two-visit” offer may mean two trips with several appointments on each.

A KEY QUESTION

Ask who confirms readiness for each stage before you book travel.

At a glance.

Stages to confirm
Stage Purpose Check
Assessment Suitability and preparation What remains provisional?
Surgery Implant placement When is the early review?
Healing Allow integration in bone Who confirms readiness?
Temporary teeth Replacement during treatment, if suitable What is the backup plan?
Final teeth Make, fit and check the restoration Are adjustments included?
Maintenance Cleaning and reviews Where and at whose cost?

General differences to discuss with your dentist. This comparison does not determine which treatment is suitable for you.

01

Clarify “two visits”

A visit may mean an appointment, a trip or a treatment phase. Extra preparation or reviews can mean more trips. One-stage and two-stage surgery describe surgical approaches; two-stage surgery includes uncovering the implant later. Neither term gives the total appointment count.

Record clinician-supplied dates in the implant visit planning worksheet, then compare each trip’s costs in the two-quote comparison worksheet. Leave charges unknown until confirmed; neither worksheet determines clinical readiness.

02

Assess before setting dates

The dentist checks your mouth, medical history and necessary imaging. Photos cannot confirm a surgical plan. Extractions, gum treatment or grafting may add appointments and healing time.

03

Allow for bone healing

Cambridge University Hospitals describes bone healing as usually three to six months, sometimes longer. Preparation and making the final teeth add time. Feeling comfortable does not establish readiness.

The dentist must review healing before the next stage; an online guide cannot give a personal completion date.

  • When and where are early reviews?
  • Who do I contact between trips?
  • What happens if healing delays travel?
04

Identify temporary teeth

Ask whether proposed teeth are fixed or removable, temporary or final. Same-day teeth depend on clinical findings and may still need later replacement. Agree what you could wear if fixed temporary teeth cannot be fitted, including any period without a replacement.

If a full arch is proposed, compare All-on-4 and All-on-6 treatment plans and the questions to ask about each restoration stage.

05

Leave time for fitting checks

Confirm scans or impressions, try-ins, fitting and bite adjustments. Raise concerns before departure. A booked flight should not pressure you to accept unresolved problems; check the cost of changing travel.

Before agreeing to the final fitting appointments, check what the complete implant cost should cover. Ask whether the restoration and fitting are included in the written total.

06

Prepare for recovery

Give the team your health history, medicines and supplements. Follow their preparation instructions; do not devise your own fasting or medication schedule. For sedation or general anaesthesia, arrange the required escort and recovery support.

Contact the surgeon about worsening swelling or soreness. Keep care instructions and a treatment summary showing dates, implant positions, brand and model, temporary components and remaining work.
