A KEY QUESTION
Treat gum problems and arrange reassessment before committing to elective cosmetic work.
Bleeding needs a check
Bleeding, soreness, swelling, persistent bad breath, receding gums or loose teeth warrant a dental appointment. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose gum disease, and healthy-feeling gums may still have problems.
Very sore, swollen gums or loosening teeth need urgent dental assessment. Do not wait for a cosmetic consultation or trip.
Understand the findings
Gingivitis is gum inflammation; periodontitis damages supporting tissues and bone. Untreated gingivitis can progress. The dentist may check bleeding and plaque, measure spaces around teeth and take X-rays.
Share your health, medicines, smoking and gum-treatment history. Ask for a plain-language diagnosis and whether specialist advice is needed.
If your concern is receding gums or exposed roots, prepare these gum recession and gum graft questions for your clinical assessment.

Treat gum disease first
Veneers and crowns do not treat unhealthy supporting tissues. Decay and gum disease should be treated before veneers. Ask which work is necessary for health and which is an optional appearance change.
- Which teeth are affected?
- What treatment must happen first?
- Who will reassess my gums before cosmetic work?
Allow time for review
Treatment may include cleaning advice, professional plaque removal, care below the gumline or specialist treatment. A single cleaning visit is not automatic clearance for cosmetic work. Confirm review timing and what happens to quotes and appointments if more care is needed. Flight dates should not decide clinical readiness.
Keep cleaning practical
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. Ask the team to demonstrate suitable tools and techniques, including around proposed restorations. Report areas you cannot reach and keep gum reviews even when the dental work looks satisfactory.
Before travelling
Ask whether local gum care is needed before an Antalya visit and what records to bring. Budget for reassessment, maintenance and possible extra travel. Best Smile Turkey coordinates enquiries; the treating dental team provides clinical care. Confirm specific gum or specialist services directly.
