UNDERSTAND THE CROWN FOUNDATION

Post and core before a crown

A core rebuilds missing tooth to support a crown. A post helps hold that core when the remaining tooth cannot do so adequately. Not every root-treated tooth needs a post.

A KEY QUESTION

Ask what will retain the core and why a post is needed in this tooth.

01

Identify each component

A post may be metal or fibre and sits inside a tooth after root canal treatment. The core rebuilds missing structure; the crown fits over it. Ask whether “build-up” in the quote includes a post, core and final crown or only some of these.

02

Check why a post is needed

A post retains the core; it is not a routine way to strengthen the root. Enough remaining tooth may make a post unnecessary. Ask why it is proposed here, especially if every root-treated tooth in a plan is assigned one.

The visual guide

Three parts. Three different jobs.

A post-and-core proposal concerns rebuilding a retained natural tooth.

Post, when needed
Sits within the retained tooth to help hold the core.

A core may be needed without a post. Root canal treatment alone does not establish a need for one.

Take this question to your consultation

What will retain my core, and what does a post add in this tooth?

Abstract component relationship, not an anatomical cross-section or a fitting sequence. A post uses a retained natural tooth; an implant is a different treatment. Guide sources and information.
03

Assess the remaining tooth

The amount and arrangement of sound tooth matter. “Ferrule” describes a band of natural tooth engaged by the crown. A post cannot replace an assessment of whether the tooth is restorable.

Further investigation or a specialist opinion may help. A photo cannot show every problem beneath the visible tooth.

  • What do the root and supporting tissues show?
  • Does previous treatment need review?
  • What remains uncertain about keeping the tooth?
04

A post is different from an implant

A post sits inside a retained natural root. An implant is placed in the jaw to replace a missing root and support a restoration. If a quote says “screw”, clarify whether your tooth stays or is removed. Extraction, implants and their crowns need separate explanation and agreement.

05

Understand the sequence

The dentist removes part of the root-filling material to make room for the post, secures it and builds or fits the core before the crown. Ask whether the root canal treatment needs review first, why the material is suitable, and what temporary protection is planned. Agree handover between clinicians.

06

Discuss possible failure

Root fracture is one risk behind using posts only when needed. Ask what would happen if the crown or foundation loosened or further root treatment became necessary, including reassessment and component removal. Agree how to get help. A warranty cannot guarantee the natural tooth’s health.

07

Record the work

For Antalya treatment, itemise root canal work, post, core, temporary restoration, crown and reviews. Mark provisional decisions and ask how changes affect costs or travel. Keep records identifying the tooth and completed work.

Best Smile Turkey coordinates enquiries; the treating dental team provides treatment. Confirm the proposed system, availability and reviews after returning home.

Use the crown cost and treatment-scope checklist to separate the crown unit from any root canal, post, core or temporary work. Ask which items are included in your own quote.
