PREPARE ACCURATE DEVICE RECORDS

MRI scans with dental work: records and screening questions

Tell the MRI department about fixed and removable dental work during screening. The imaging team decides what records and precautions are needed; a material name such as titanium is not personal scan clearance.

Dental work and an MRI scan

  1. Identify

Describe fixed work, removable appliances and any dental items whose details are uncertain.

  2. Share records

Send requested information early enough for the department to check it.

  3. Follow instructions

The imaging team decides preparation and whether further information is needed.

A KEY QUESTION

Let the MRI team assess the exact devices and planned scan. A generic statement that dental metal is safe is not individual clearance.

01

MRI has its own screening

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves. A previous dental X-ray or CBCT examination does not answer its safety questions. The NHS includes dental fillings and bridges among the metal items to disclose.

Complete the whole screening form, including other implants and relevant health information. A previous successful MRI does not replace new screening, particularly if dental work or other devices have changed.

02

Describe devices and provide records

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

List crowns, bridges, implants, fixed braces or retainers and removable appliances. Distinguish what is fixed from what you normally remove yourself. If a name is unfamiliar, describe the item and provide the dentist’s contact details.

Contact the department early if you cannot answer a question. It may request a treatment summary or manufacturer record. Ask the original dentist, including a clinic abroad, for accurate details; do not guess a model from an online catalogue.

03

Image quality is a separate question

Metal can distort MRI images, an effect called artefact. That is different from deciding whether scanning is safe. The area examined and imaging method matter to the department’s decision.

Ask whether the dental work could affect the intended images and whether the dentist needs to supply more information. Neither an “all ceramic” description nor the appearance of a crown identifies every supporting component.

04

Follow the MRI team’s instructions

Princess Alexandra Hospital’s guidance covers removable metal dentures and contacting the department about fixed braces. Its local policy is not a universal instruction. Ask your own department what to remove and how to store it.

Never detach fixed dental work yourself. Check that requested records arrived and report treatment since the form was completed. This article gives no waiting interval or clearance. Best Smile Turkey coordinates enquiries; the dental provider supplies records and radiology decides the scanning plan.

Common questions

Do not assume that they do. Disclose them on screening and let the imaging team confirm the plan for your scan.

It may not answer every screening question. Ask what device or treatment records the MRI department needs.

Do not remove it yourself. Tell the department you have one and follow the plan agreed with the relevant professionals.

No. Give the MRI team the procedure date and requested device details so it can provide individual instructions.
