A KEY QUESTION
Get personal instructions for each treatment stage; a website cannot set your stopping period.
Describe what you use
List cigarettes, vaping and other tobacco or nicotine products separately, including nicotine-replacement products. Give an idea of frequency and recent changes. If you smoke or vape again after stopping, tell the team so they can review the plan.

How smoking affects the proposal
Your gums, surgical site, possible grafting and extent of treatment all matter. Ask why the dentist recommends proceeding, preparation or postponement. Settle the clinic’s requirements before flights or a non-refundable deposit create pressure to continue.
Vaping needs its own discussion
The NHS describes vaping as substantially less harmful than smoking and a possible quitting aid, but it is not risk-free. This does not establish its suitability around implant surgery. Mention nicotine-free products too. If dental advice conflicts with your stopping plan, ask the clinicians to resolve it together rather than switching products yourself or returning to cigarettes.
Get support with stopping
A stop-smoking service, GP or pharmacist can discuss suitable support. Share the dentist’s requirements and ask for instructions covering preparation, healing and later stages.
- Which products do the instructions cover?
- Who can help with cravings?
- What should I do after a lapse?
- When will readiness be reviewed, and what if surgery is delayed?
Options while implants are deferred
Ask how to address eating, appearance or denture problems while the decision remains open. A temporary or non-surgical option may help, following examination. A different implant brand does not remove a health-related risk. Clarify what can wait and any preparatory costs.
Care after placement
Implants need careful cleaning and regular follow-up. Ask how your smoking history and gum findings affect review arrangements. Obtain clinical instructions from the treating team and confirm access to care at home, including between treatment trips.
