A KEY QUESTION
Ask for a demonstration, then show the team you can reach every area.
Know your restoration
Implant crowns, implant bridges and tooth-supported bridges have different cleaning access. Fixed teeth are not removed by patients. Ask the dentist to identify supports, gum margins and spaces beneath the bridge. Inflammation around implants can involve bone loss; tooth-supported bridges also leave natural teeth to protect.
Brush gently and thoroughly
Brush twice daily for two minutes and clean between teeth daily. Cover inner, outer and chewing surfaces. Ask the hygienist to check your technique rather than adding pressure.
Use fluoride toothpaste for natural teeth; spit without immediately rinsing. Ask which paste suits your restorations. Manual or electric brushes can work if they reach every surface.
Clean beneath the bridge
Visible surfaces are only part of the routine. Have the team show how to clean under the false teeth along the gumline, including the back of a full-arch bridge. Report trapped food or spaces you cannot reach. Never use pins, sharp tools or force.
- Which areas need cleaning?
- Which brush sizes or floss should I use?
- What if a tool catches, hurts or cannot pass?
Choose tools that fit
Interdental brushes, suitable floss or a water flosser may help where a toothbrush cannot reach. Brushes should fit without force. Mention limited hand movement, poor vision or difficulty reaching. Ask for alternatives or a diagram. Mouthwash cannot replace brushing and interdental cleaning; check whether and when to use it.

Report changes
Arrange a dental check for puffy or bleeding gums, persistent discomfort or areas you cannot clean. Report loose, cracked or sharp fixed teeth promptly; do not remove, tighten or repair them yourself.
Significant pain, spreading swelling or feeling unwell needs urgent assessment. Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs immediate local emergency care.
Arrange maintenance
Agree professional cleaning and review intervals. Before overseas treatment, ask a dentist near home about maintaining the proposed restoration. Request implant and component details, imaging and the treating clinician’s contact. Confirm repair costs separately.
Before booking, ask your treating dental team who can provide maintenance and reviews after you return home. Confirm any charges and guarantee terms in writing.
