A KEY QUESTION
Bring the proposal and records, with a clear question you want the second dentist to answer.
Define the uncertainty
Write a specific question: could this tooth be retained, why is a crown needed, or why are neighbouring teeth included? Explain priorities such as preservation or future care. You can also ask the first dentist for clarification; a clearer explanation may resolve the concern.
Choose the assessment
Ask about relevant experience and any commercial connection with the proposed provider. A complex issue may warrant specialist assessment. Confirm the fee, written opinion and possible investigation costs. For UK care, check GDC registration; it does not establish permission to practise in Turkey. Another photo-based estimate may leave clinical questions unresolved.
Bring useful records
Take the tooth-by-tooth plan, symptoms and relevant medical history. Request original images and reports where available, then use an agreed secure transfer route. Distinguish written findings from your recollection. The second dentist decides whether further examination or investigations are needed.
- Which teeth and procedures are proposed, and why?
- How old are the images, and has treatment followed?
- What should the written opinion answer?

Discuss irreversible steps
For extraction, ask why the tooth cannot reasonably be retained. For crowns or veneers, discuss preparation and alternatives preserving more tooth. Ask about the consequences and urgency of waiting. New pain or swelling needs prompt advice rather than waiting for an elective second opinion.
If recommendations differ
Check whether both clinicians assessed the same teeth, evidence and goal. Record each finding, recommendation and remaining uncertainty. Ask what would resolve the disagreement. Another appropriately experienced clinician may help if uncertainty remains.
Leave time to decide
GDC consent standards emphasise options, understanding and decision time for UK care; they are not Turkish law. The GDC also advises discussing overseas plans with your dentist. Ask the treating clinician to address the independent findings before irreversible treatment. Flights and expiring offers should not determine consent.
