A KEY QUESTION
Keep a clear contact for lost, broken or poorly fitting retainers, including after the original treatment package finishes.
Why retention continues
Teeth may move towards their former positions and can also change with age. Retainers reduce unwanted movement without guaranteeing that teeth never change. Consider the long-term routine before starting orthodontics and raise any difficulty you expect in maintaining it.
Your retainer design
Retainers can be removable or bonded to teeth, and some people need both. Have the design, teeth covered and reason for the choice explained. Keep the retainer names in your records so you can describe them clearly to another practice.

Wear and cleaning
Follow your clinician’s schedule and get advice before changing it. Obtain instructions for storage, appliance cleaning and cleaning around bonded wires. Very hot water can distort clear plastic retainers; use the method recommended for your particular material.
Loss, damage or changed fit
Contact the treating team if a removable retainer no longer seats normally or a bonded retainer seems damaged. Do not reshape, glue or force it. Report when it last fitted and any recent dental work. Fixed retainers need professional checks of bonding, cleanliness and surrounding tissues.
Future dental work
Tell the dentist about your retainer before a filling, bonding or crown. The work may change its fit. If different clinicians are involved, agree who checks or replaces it and how teeth will be retained between appointments. Bring the appliance when requested.

Long-term reviews and costs
Confirm how long the original practice provides reviews and who takes over later. Budget for replacement appliances and any travel. An included first retainer does not settle later charges. A local dentist’s agreement to routine care may not include retainer repairs.
