A KEY QUESTION
Get written instructions for the first removal, wound care and later adjustments.
Decide on extraction first
Each tooth’s removal needs a reason and a discussion of preservation. Then compare an immediate denture with waiting for healing before making one. Explain practical concerns such as speaking at work or eating with others. Suitability depends on your mouth and treatment.
Making the denture beforehand
The laboratory uses impressions taken while the teeth remain. The shape after extraction must be estimated, so fitting adjustments may be needed. Ask which appearance and fit decisions can be checked beforehand and allow flexibility in travel arrangements.
The first night and wound care
Your dentist may ask you to leave the denture in initially, including overnight, but this is not needed for everyone. Confirm when and by whom it should first be removed, and what to do if it will not go back in. Follow specific bleeding, food, rinsing and cleaning instructions. Avoid repeatedly lifting it to inspect the wound.
Why the fit changes
Gums and underlying bone change shape after extraction. The denture may loosen and need lining changes or later replacement. Ask whether a lining is temporary and when it will be reviewed. The dentist should assess readiness for each stage rather than rely on a fixed timetable.

Soreness and urgent concerns
Contact the team about pressure spots, movement or difficulty eating. Do not grind the base, add household materials or force it into a swollen mouth. Persistent bleeding, severe pain or concerning facial swelling need urgent dental advice. Follow your emergency instructions and seek local help when needed; do not wait for travel or a coordinator.
Costs and follow-up visits
Confirm that the proposed service is available and how early checks, healing reviews and later dentures would be arranged.
