PREPARE FOR COMPLETE DENTURES

Complete dentures: impressions, trial fitting and getting used to them

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower jaw and is removable. Making it usually involves impressions, bite records, a trial and fitting, followed by checks as you get used to it.

Complete dentures and fitting

  1. Records

Impressions and bite records guide the shape and position of the teeth.

  2. Trial

Discuss appearance and the bite before the denture is finished.

  3. Adaptation

Learning to use the denture and checking its fit are separate needs.

A KEY QUESTION

Use the trial to discuss appearance and the bite, and allow time for adjustments.

01

What should the new denture improve?

Bring existing dentures and describe problems with eating, movement, speech or comfort. Complete dentures usually rest on the gums; mouth shape and muscle control affect their use. Ask what is realistic for each jaw rather than comparing your experience with someone else’s.

02

Impressions and bite records

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

Impressions record the supporting tissues. Bite records show how the jaws meet and guide the laboratory. Tell the team about gagging, discomfort or difficulty holding a position. A record may need repeating, so allow room in the timetable for this.

03

The trial appointment

Teeth arranged in wax let you and the dentist check appearance and the bite before finishing. Discuss colour, position and lip support. Ask what can change and whether another trial is needed. A booked flight should not pressure you into approving an arrangement you are unhappy with.

04

Fitting and early checks

Practise removing and replacing the denture. Get cleaning instructions and a review date. Pain, inability to wear it or difficulty eating need contact with the team. Ask whether to wear it before a review to help locate sore areas. Do not trim it or alter the bite yourself.

05

Getting used to eating and speaking

Initial bulkiness, speech changes or extra saliva can occur. Follow advice on manageable portions of soft food and gradual diet changes. Chewing on both sides may help control; reading aloud can help speech practice. Persistent movement or pain needs assessment, rather than increasing adhesive or simply tolerating it.

06

Ongoing care

Your mouth needs reviews even without natural teeth. Confirm service availability, the visits needed and who provides care after travel.

  • Which jaw or jaws are included?
  • When are records and trials planned?
  • What if another trial or adjustment is needed?
  • Who checks the mouth after fitting?
  • Which reviews and repairs cost extra?

Common questions

Do not assume so. Ask for the timetable for records, laboratory work, trials and reviews.

No. It is a chance to check the proposed teeth before the finished appliance is made.

Not necessarily. Explain which familiar features you value and what needs improving.

Yes. The dentist checks your mouth and the denture’s condition and fit. Agree an individual review interval.
