Understanding adult fluoride care

  1. Role

Fluoride helps teeth resist acid damage linked to decay.

  2. Label

Check fluoride content rather than relying on front-of-pack claims.

  3. Plan

Additional products should have a reason, instructions and a review point.

A KEY QUESTION

Use fluoride toothpaste regularly. Get dental advice before adding or changing prescription-strength products.

01

How fluoride helps

Plaque bacteria produce acids that remove minerals from teeth. Fluoride supports remineralisation and helps teeth resist decay. It cannot rebuild a missing piece of tooth. Pain or a suspected cavity still needs assessment, even if you use fluoride regularly.

02

Read the toothpaste label

NHS advice for adults is at least 1,350 ppm fluoride. Ppm means parts per million, the concentration in the product. Labels such as “sensitive” or “natural” do not answer this question. Follow different instructions if a clinician has prescribed a preparation.

03

Make the routine effective

Brush twice daily, then spit without rinsing immediately. If a fluoride mouthwash is recommended, use it at a separate time. Tell the dental team if taste, foaming, soreness or difficulty spitting makes the routine hard to follow.

04

When extra protection is suggested

A dentist may recommend higher-fluoride toothpaste or professional application after assessing decay risk. Find out what prompted the recommendation and when it will be reviewed. Do not use someone else’s prescription. Dryness, cleaning problems or repeated decay may need attention too.

05

Combining products

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

Get a clear schedule if you use more than one product, including whether a prescription replaces your usual toothpaste. A prescriber or pharmacist can resolve conflicting instructions. Keep the directions and review date, and arrange supplies before travelling.

06

Protecting restored teeth

Crowns and veneers do not remove the need for prevention. Discuss vulnerable natural tooth surfaces around restorations and the rest of your mouth. Build this care into a treatment plan you can continue at home; a particular product’s availability needs checking with the provider.
