A KEY QUESTION
Know who sends the referral, explains the findings and handles care while you wait.
Why a referral is suggested
A general dentist may seek expertise or facilities needed for a particular problem. That can be appropriate planning rather than a sign that something went wrong. Establish whether the appointment includes treatment or whether recommended work would need a separate booking.
Common specialties
Endodontics covers the pulp and root canals; periodontics covers tooth-supporting tissues. Prosthodontics concerns restoring and replacing teeth, while restorative dentistry can combine these needs. Orthodontics concerns alignment and bite. Oral surgery handles surgical dental problems; oral medicine investigates medical conditions affecting the mouth.
Checking a professional title
The UK General Dental Council maintains specialist lists. Registration as a dentist differs from listing in a specialty, and “special interest” does not prove specialist status. Obtain the clinician’s full name and relevant registration. Overseas care follows the applicable local regulation and qualifications.
What has been accepted
A referral or assessment does not guarantee every proposed procedure will be provided. Before travelling, confirm receipt, required records, appointment purpose and costs with the receiving service. Continue routine and urgent dental care while waiting.
Who does each part
Different clinicians may assess a root canal, provide a crown and review the result. Record who handles each stage and who receives the report. Confirm those arrangements with the receiving practice, including a contact for new symptoms before the appointment.

Clinical and coordination questions
For proposed treatment abroad, verify the actual clinician and any specialist referral directly with the provider. Practical coordination does not establish clinical suitability or service availability. Diagnosis, consent and treatment decisions need the responsible clinician, with clear follow-up arrangements after returning home.
