A KEY QUESTION
Describe the pattern and its impact, ask what is being investigated, and agree a review plan that takes your symptoms seriously.
Describe the pattern and its impact
Note where the burning occurs, whether it comes and goes or changes through the day, and any dryness or altered taste. Explain its effect on meals, sleep and conversation. A short diary can help without deliberately provoking symptoms.
Bring your medicine list, recent dental history and products already tried. A symptom starting after treatment is useful information, but timing alone does not establish the cause.
What the examination may investigate
NIDCR describes possible explanations including dry mouth, infection, irritation, certain medicines and nutritional or medical conditions. The clinician may consider blood tests, a mouth swab or saliva assessment, depending on the findings. Not everyone needs the same investigations.
Ask what each test can clarify and who will explain the result. A normal-looking mouth does not make the pain imaginary; a normal test does not establish a diagnosis on its own.

A symptom is not the same as a diagnosis
Find out whether burning mouth syndrome has been diagnosed or investigations are continuing. Reassurance intended for a confirmed diagnosis does not automatically apply to an unexplained ulcer, lump or sore area.
Show the dentist any new visible change, even if you have an existing diagnosis. Do not decide that a medicine or deficiency is responsible and start supplements or change prescriptions yourself.
Support and follow-up
Guy’s and St Thomas’ describes support for established burning mouth syndrome that addresses symptoms and living with persistent discomfort. Help with coping does not mean the pain is unreal. Available services vary; discuss what support and realistic goals suit you.
Agree a review point and report changes or a plan that is not helping. Before elective dentistry, discuss how existing symptoms affect expectations. Best Smile Turkey is an intermediary and cannot establish that cosmetic treatment will relieve burning.
