A KEY QUESTION
Agree recovery, review and travel arrangements before booking around an extraction.
Ask why removal is recommended
An impacted tooth cannot come through normally, perhaps because of another tooth or lack of space. Teeth causing no problems are usually monitored. Decay, recurring gum infection or a cyst may justify treatment. Ask which finding applies, who monitors a retained tooth and when to seek an earlier review.

Discuss nerve risk
Lower wisdom teeth may lie near nerves supplying sensation to the lip, chin or tongue. Surgery can cause temporary or permanent altered sensation. Ask about your anatomy and whether additional imaging would change treatment; a three-dimensional scan is not automatic. Record existing numbness and agree how new or persistent changes would be assessed.
Understand the proposed operation
Some teeth need surgical access. For selected lower teeth near a nerve, coronectomy removes the crown while retaining the roots to reduce nerve-injury risk. Roots may need later attention. Ask about suitability, follow-up and a specialist opinion; this cannot be chosen from a photograph.
Plan recovery support
Swelling can increase over the first few days, with soreness and restricted mouth opening. Follow individual eating, cleaning, activity and pain-relief instructions. Arrange suitable food, transport and quiet accommodation. If sedation is planned, confirm adult support; a driver or hotel receptionist is not automatically an escort or clinical contact.
Know when to get help
Seek urgent dental advice for bleeding that will not stop, severe or worsening pain or swelling, or pain with a bad taste, fever or feeling unwell. Significant pain may need assessment for dry socket; do not self-diagnose from a photo.
Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs immediate local emergency care. Do not wait for a coordinator or travel home for help.
Confirm travel with the clinician
Ask when your proposed journey is appropriate and whether you need a check before departure. Check airline and insurer requirements too. No online estimate provides personal fitness-to-fly clearance.
Agree the arrangements before departure:
- Costs for extra treatment, nights or changed flights
- An out-of-hours clinical contact
- A way to share records with a UK dentist
Four checkpoints before fixing your flight.
Keep the treatment decision, recovery arrangements and return journey connected.
Identify the clinical reason
Ask which finding supports treatment. Impaction alone does not establish a need for removal.
Discuss the options
Compare the options, imaging findings and individual risks with the clinician.
- Monitoring, when appropriate
- Treatment, when indicated
Arrange recovery support
Confirm food, transport, written instructions, clinical contacts and any required adult support.
Agree return travel
Ask about reviews and readiness to travel. Check airline and insurer requirements; allow for changes.
Get urgent help locally. Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs immediate local emergency care. Do not wait for a flight.
