A KEY QUESTION
Identify existing restorations before choosing a target shade.
At a glance.
| Visible surface | Colour limitation | Question for your dentist |
|---|---|---|
| Natural tooth | Response varies; a precise shade cannot be promised. | What change is realistic for my teeth? |
| Crown or veneer | Whitening does not lighten the restorative material. | Could the surrounding teeth become a different shade? |
| Filling or bonding | Existing resin does not whiten like natural tooth. | Would the colour match remain acceptable? |
| A dark individual tooth | The cause needs assessment before a colour plan. | Does this tooth need a separate investigation? |
General differences to discuss with your dentist. This comparison does not determine which treatment is suitable for you.
Identify existing dental work
Tell the dentist about crowns, veneers, fillings, bonding and root canal treatment, even if you are unsure which teeth were treated. Bring available records. Explain whether you want an overall change or a closer match between particular teeth.
What can change colour?
Whitening does not change restorative material colour. Ask whether a concern comes from the material itself or surface staining that needs professional assessment. Whitening a crown for longer will not lighten its original shade. Agree what match you would find acceptable.

Agree the order
The dentist should decide when to review the whitening response and choose any new restorative shade. Do not set your own waiting interval. For an Antalya visit, allow for reassessment; a short stay should not force an early shade decision.
- Which teeth and restorations will stay unchanged?
- When will you review the colour?
- What if the result differs from my expectation?
Does a mismatch need treatment?
You may choose to keep a sound restoration, accept a colour difference or aim for a smaller whitening change. Replacement is a separate decision with preparation, risks and costs. If proposed, request a reason and quotation for each tooth.
If replacement is proposed, compare veneer preparation and limitations and what to consider before a crown with your dentist before agreeing to change a sound restoration.

Suitability and symptoms
An examination of teeth and gums comes first. Whitening can cause sensitivity or gum irritation; follow your instructions and ask how to report troublesome symptoms.
A single dark tooth, especially after injury or root canal treatment, needs separate assessment. Confirm whitening and alternative services directly with the treating dental provider.
For a dark, root-treated tooth, read the questions about internal whitening.
