A KEY QUESTION
Record your symptoms before treatment. Worsening pain or swelling needs timely care rather than a cosmetic consultation.
Possible causes
Decay, cracks, worn fillings, gum disease, enamel wear and exposed roots can cause sensitivity. A general label does not explain every twinge, particularly if it is new or affects one tooth. Your dentist may need tests or imaging to distinguish the causes.
Describe what you notice
Note when symptoms started, the area involved and any ordinary trigger, such as cold drinks or biting. Say whether pain ends quickly, lingers or starts by itself, and whether it affects sleep. Do not deliberately provoke pain or guess which tooth is responsible.

Relief and treatment
A desensitising product may help some causes. Follow the recommended use and review plan without letting a trial delay assessment of worsening pain. If a procedure is proposed, have its purpose and alternatives explained. Sensitivity alone does not mean a tooth needs a crown.
Urgent and emergency symptoms
Seek dental advice for toothache lasting over two days, pain not helped by usual pain relief, fever, pain on biting, a bad taste or cheek or jaw swelling. Severe or worsening symptoms need earlier advice. In England, NHS 111 can help if a dentist is unavailable.
Swelling around the eye or neck, or swelling affecting breathing, swallowing or speaking, needs immediate emergency care. In the UK, use A&E or 999 as appropriate. Do not drive yourself to A&E; have someone take you or call 999 for an ambulance.
Before cosmetic treatment or travel
The cause may need treatment or monitoring before elective work. Keep the explanation and starting symptoms in your records. Discuss changes to the plan before irreversible treatment, even if travel is booked. Use local care when needed rather than waiting for an overseas appointment.
