A KEY QUESTION
Compare the full plan: assessment, supervision, expected colour change, side effects and follow-up.
Check what can change colour
Whitening lightens natural teeth. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour with tooth whitening, so a colour mismatch needs discussion. Tell the dentist about sensitivity, previous dental work and the change you hope to see.
Whitening is optional. Keeping your current shade is a valid choice. Ask whether your concern involves general colour, surface staining or one darker tooth, because these questions need different assessment.
What does supervised home care involve?
A dentist can supply whitening gel and trays made to fit your teeth. The dental team checks fit and explains use and gum protection. Treatment continues at home according to that individual plan.
Ask for written instructions covering use, storage, review and whom to contact. Explain if the routine would be difficult to manage. Do not substitute an online product or change the prescribed routine to meet an event deadline.

What should an in-clinic proposal explain?
Ask what the appointment involves, how the gums will be protected and whether any home stage is included. The NHS describes in-surgery whitening as a faster approach; your dentist must explain the actual system and what is realistic for you.
Compare supervision and the complete course rather than an equipment label. Note which appointments are included and what happens if you need a review after leaving the clinic.
Check the whitening starting prices and scope when comparing an offer. Confirm the available method, cleaning, appointments and reviews; a listed fee does not establish a complete course or suitability.
Agree a review and a response to sensitivity
Results vary and colour can darken again. Sensitivity or gum irritation can occur; contact the dentist if side effects bother you. Ask how they want you to respond before continuing treatment.
Record the starting shade, the change you and your dentist are aiming for and the review arrangements. Ask the treating provider which whitening options are available. A dentist must assess whether they are suitable for you.
