ASK FOR INDIVIDUAL MEDICINE ADVICE

What should I ask about pain relief after dental treatment?

Ask your dentist or pharmacist for a pain-relief plan that fits your health and current medicines. If pain is worsening or the plan is not helping, you need advice about the cause, not an improvised higher dose. This guide does not prescribe medicines.

Pain with severe swelling? Swelling affecting breathing, swallowing, speech, the neck or the eye needs immediate local emergency care. Do not wait for a medicine question to be answered. The coordination team’s WhatsApp is not an emergency service.

A KEY QUESTION

Keep the written instructions and know how to get reassessed.

01

Describe the pain

Say where it hurts, when it started and whether it is improving, worsening or returning. Mention swelling, fever, pain on biting and effects on sleep or eating. Give the procedure and date if you are seeing a different clinician.

Pain medicines provide temporary relief. The underlying dental problem may still need treatment.

02

Bring your medicine list

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

Include prescriptions, shop-bought products, supplements and occasional medicines. Show packets or label photographs if names are uncertain. Tell the clinician what you have taken and when.

Previous reactions, health conditions, pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect suitability. Do not omit cold remedies or medicines bought abroad.

03

Understand the instructions

The written plan should identify the medicine and explain its use, restrictions and review point. Clarify what to do about a missed dose, vomiting or difficulty taking it with the pharmacist or prescriber.

Check advice about driving, alcohol and your existing medicines. Read the plan back if anything is unclear, and request a translation if needed.

04

Avoid overlapping ingredients

Different brands can contain the same ingredient. NHS and SDCEP guidance highlight accidental paracetamol overdose through overlapping products. Have a pharmacist check the complete combination before adding pain relief.

If you may have taken too much, seek urgent medical advice even if you feel well. In the UK contact NHS 111 for excess paracetamol; elsewhere use local urgent medical or poison advice. Keep the packets.

05

When pain needs assessment

Contact a dentist if pain is worsening, not controlled by the agreed plan or accompanied by swelling, fever or a bad taste. Do not increase medicine beyond the instructions yourself. Use local urgent dental services if the practice is unavailable.

Swelling around an eye or the neck, or swelling affecting breathing, swallowing or speech, needs immediate emergency care. In the UK use 999 or A&E; elsewhere use local emergency services.

06

Keep one current plan

If another clinician gives different advice, tell them about the earlier instructions and ask them to reconcile it. Keep the latest plan, its date and the packaging together. Report side effects.

Questions for a clinical assessment

Seek the local care described above first. When you speak with the clinician, these questions may help you understand the plan.

  • Who should I contact after returning home, and how will reviews be arranged?
  • Will I receive my treatment records and written care instructions?
  • Who will carry out my treatment, and how can I check their qualifications and registration?

Common questions

A dentist or pharmacist needs your health and medicine information to advise safely.

Not without checking the ingredients and suitability of the combination.

Seek advice and reassessment. Do not exceed instructions or change a prescription yourself.

Get urgent medical advice and keep the packaging. Do not wait for symptoms.
