Reflux, vomiting and tooth wear: coordinating dental and medical care

Tell your dentist about recurring reflux or vomiting when discussing tooth wear. Stomach acid can contribute, but worn teeth alone cannot diagnose reflux or an eating disorder. Ongoing symptoms may need medical assessment too.

Reflux and tooth wear

  1. Symptom pattern

Describe how often reflux or vomiting occurs.

  2. Finding the cause

Tooth wear alone does not identify a medical condition.

  3. Prevention and repair

Repairing teeth does not treat the cause of acid exposure.

A KEY QUESTION

Address the cause of acid exposure alongside any dental repair. Crowns cannot treat reflux or vomiting.

01

Why the dentist asks

Stomach acid, acidic foods and drinks can contribute to erosive tooth wear. Several wear processes may occur together. Ask which findings prompted the question and what else needs investigating before deciding on treatment.

02

What to share

Describe heartburn, a sour taste, nausea or vomiting, including frequency, recent changes and previous medical advice. Include medicines and supplements. If the subject is sensitive, ask to speak privately without a companion or coordinator.

03

When to see a GP

NHS advice is to see a GP for heartburn most days, symptoms not helped by lifestyle measures and pharmacy treatments, food getting stuck, frequent vomiting or unexplained weight loss. Contact a GP or NHS 111 if symptoms worsen.

Do not change prescribed medicines or start acid-suppression treatment because of a dental observation. Ask your doctor and dentist how their advice fits together.

04

Protecting your teeth

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

The American Dental Association advises rinsing with water after vomiting and avoiding immediate brushing after acid exposure. Ask your dentist for a brushing and fluoride routine suited to you. Discuss existing dietary advice and nutritional needs before making restrictive changes.

05

What repairs can achieve

Restorations may improve damaged shape, sensitivity or function. They do not treat the medical reason for reflux or vomiting. Ask whether the cause is understood well enough to proceed and how continuing symptoms would affect the plan.

06

Follow-up

Agree who will review medical symptoms and who will check tooth wear over time. Ask what information the clinicians need to share, with your agreement. Before extensive work abroad, arrange continuing care; improved appearance does not establish that acid exposure is controlled.
