A KEY QUESTION

Check the exact medicine and route with official sources; keep your prescriber involved in any clinical decisions.

01

List the exact medicines

Record active ingredients, strengths and current instructions, including non-prescription products and supplements. Your pharmacist can help. Tell the dentist about allergies and previous reactions. Do not stop or substitute a medicine to simplify travel paperwork; discuss any difficulty with your prescriber.

02

Check for controlled ingredients

Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether a medicine contains a controlled drug. GOV.UK requires controlled medicines in hand luggage when entering or leaving the UK, with evidence they were prescribed for you. Read the guidance for your circumstances, including the return journey.

03

Verify Turkish entry requirements

Turkish customs guidance requires supporting documentation, such as a prescription or medical report, for personal medicines, with quantities related to the stay. This is not permission for every ingredient. Obtain medicine-specific advice from the Turkish embassy or consulate about restrictions, authorisation and documents; check transit countries too.

04

Keep packaging and storage practical

THE DETAILS TO UNDERSTAND

Keep original pharmacy-labelled packaging and leaflets where practicable. If you use an organiser, discuss identification with your pharmacist. Confirm storage requirements and airline rules for liquids, needles or cooling equipment. Plan for baggage delays without exceeding medicine limits or your prescriber’s arrangements.

05

Check new prescriptions before returning

For medicines prescribed in Turkey, get the active ingredient and written instructions explained by a clinician or pharmacist. British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies. GOV.UK also gives specific return-entry instructions for UK residents prescribed controlled medicines abroad. Check before bringing a new medicine home.

06

Recheck if plans change

Revisit official guidance close to departure, especially if your itinerary or prescription changes. Save dated replies that identify the medicine and journey. An old answer may not cover a different product, quantity or route.
