A KEY QUESTION
State which treatment you are declining or what information you need, then agree an interim plan.
Understand before agreeing
NHS guidance describes consent as voluntary and informed. An adult able to make that decision can refuse treatment. Request a clear explanation, accessible information or interpreting support if needed.
A signature cannot resolve an unanswered question. Overseas consent rules and complex capacity situations need individual advice.
What would no treatment mean?
Declining an appearance change and leaving active disease untreated can have different consequences. The dentist should explain the findings, what may happen without treatment and how uncertain that prediction is.
If monitoring is reasonable, establish who will review the tooth and what would change the plan. Monitoring needs a purpose and a route back to assessment.

Explore the reason for hesitating
Explain whether your concern is cost, tooth preservation, anxiety, timing or another issue. Discuss reasonable alternatives, including less invasive or staged care where appropriate.
For a second opinion, request existing findings, images and the proposed plan. Establish how much time is clinically reasonable. Another dentist may need an examination and charge separately.
Pausing once treatment has begun
GDC standards for UK professionals recognise patients’ ability to withdraw consent or request a stop. Tell the clinician or use the agreed signal so they can respond safely.
A prepared tooth, wound or unfinished procedure may still need protection. Clarify the immediate care needed even if you no longer want the original next step.
Costs and booking pressure
Request an explanation of completed-work charges, laboratory commitments, deposits and cancellations using the written terms. Pausing does not automatically establish a refund.
Say if a flight or deadline makes you feel rushed. Best Smile Turkey is an intermediary; the treating provider explains clinical choices, and each organisation should explain its own payment or booking terms.
Leave with an interim plan
Keep a record of your decision, recommended care, review and clinical contact. Know which symptoms need earlier assessment. Urgent problems need local care while you consider non-urgent work.
You can revisit the discussion, but options may change as the tooth’s condition changes. Give the next clinician a clear account of what was completed and what you declined.
